One of the problems that i notice is that Inkscape offers you some different styles for each font (as in italic, bold, etc.) but for some fonts - especialy wacky free display ones - ONLY ONE of these choices will show the font, all others will by default show the system closest like sans or arial etc. So my advice is to open the text and font dialog and select your font and then try each choice.
